Seeing your team win a title is no doubt the greatest feeling in football, but those who have witnessed their side manage to stay up at the end of the season despite all odds being against them will tell you that the relief and joy you feel in that moment comes very close, unless you're a Sunderland fan, then you'd probably take a secure mid-table finish for once. Today, I give my thoughts on whether I think these five struggling clubs in England can manage to come back and stay up, or whether they're not capable of making the comeback.
Club: Rotherham United
Division: Championship
Position : 24th
Record: W4/D4/L18
Points from Safety: 9
Since returning to the Championship after a nine year absence back in 2014/15, Rotherham have struggled in their first two years in the second tier, finishing a place above the relegation zone in successive seasons. Their fans would have gone into this year hoping for 'third time lucky' as they say, however, they've suffered the opposite. With just 20 of the 46 games remaining, they sit bottom of the Championship, nine points from survival, and with their leaky defence, which has conceded over 2 goals a game, a return to League One looks likely. Up the other end they struggle just as much, as they've only found the net 27 times in 26 games. Rotherham's form is really poor, picking up only 9 points in their last 10 games, which is surprisingly an improvement on the prior 16 games. They definitely need to invest in this window if they're to stay up this year. They need someone with experience to come in and organise this back four and someone up top that can score goals, as only Danny Ward has managed 4 or more league goals this season (currently on 9). They do have talent in this side, players like: Forde, Ward, Adeyemi, Kelly and Odemwingie are all quality on their day, but none of these are playing well enough consistently. Ultimately, I think they'll go down this year, the core of the squad just isn't strong enough and a clearout of some deadweight at the club is needed and I think a young manager who has a new, fresh idea for the club could benefit them massively in the future.
Club: Coventry City
Division: EFL League One
Position: 24th
Record: W4/D9/L13
Points From Safety: 4
I think many football fans would agree that it's sad to see what's happening to Coventry, a Premier League side until their relegation in 2000/2001, they now find themselves following up their 8th place finish last season by sitting bottom of League One with 20 games to go. Off the pitch, it's a nightmare, protests against the owners at an all time high, but little being done about it. To put it bluntly, Coventry fans are unfortunately the latest to find out that if you're not in the Premier League, the FA quite frankly couldn't care less what happens. On the pitch, performances have been shocking, managing 2 points from the last 10 games, surprisingly those points came against Peterborough and Bolton, showing that this team can be a threat on their day. Loanees like Adam Armstrong and Ryan Kent helped them massively last year but, they haven't brought in quality to replace these players and their paying the price for it. Despite not conceding too many, with respect to their league position, goals have been in short supply and they really need to bring in someone to lead the line. Other than Bigirimana, Lameiras and Reilly, quality is in short supply in this massive squad. They could really do with offloading a fair few in this squad and bring in players that are going to benefit the team, Omar Bogle for example. They've got a decent manager in Russell Slade who has good experience at this level, and, if given time, he will more than like turn this average squad into a well disciplined, decent outfit. I think they've got enough about them to stay up, what's important for them though, is getting a league win as soon as possible, to give the players some belief in each other and confidence in their own ability. If things don't get sorted, they'll end up finding themselves in the same position in the years to come and the luck of surviving will eventually run out.
Club: Newport County
Division: EFL League Two
Position: 24th
Record: W4/D6/L15
Points from Safety: 6
Having got promoted to League Two back in 2012/13, Newport's first two years gave the impression they were making all the right moves, achieving 14th place and 9th place finishes respectively. However, last season instead of making continued progress and pushing for playoffs, they took a massive step backwards and only just survived. This year has been another step back for the Welsh club and after picking up 4 points from their last 10, a chance of survival looks bleak right now. Their problem is their defence, average just under 2 goals a game and despite scoring in 8 of the last 10, they always seem to fail to hang on when in a leading position or with a point on the line. They aren't a club that's financially powerful, so the likelihood is, that unless they can make money off some fringe players, there won't be a lot of players coming into the club. They do have a lot of pace and decent attacking players, but they need to find a system to start benefiting them, right now, they play like a team with no philosophy and at this level, you get punished for it, League Two has been and always will be an unforgiving division, anyone can beat anyone. They desperately need an experienced centre-back to come in and organise them, him leading from the back would be key to solving their defensive issues. The only positives for them is that Notts County are in equally bad form and that they're not battling with Barnet, but with Cheltenham starting to pick up a few wins, it's important for them to start replicating results like their one last time out. The next month is crucial for them, if they haven't won by then, I think it'll be too much for them, however, with the competitive nature of this league, you can never write a team off.
Club: Margate
Division: National League South
Position: 22nd
Record: W5/D1/L19
Points from Safety: 7
Margate's return to the National League South has not been plain sailing in any way having only just survived, as they achieved a 19th place finish last year. Any chance of returning to the Conference is out of the question though, as this season they're massively struggling with their small squad. They have the worst form of any team on this list, having suffered 10 consecutive league defeats. The problem for manager Nikki Bull, is that the problem in his side isn't just in one area, not only are they scoring less than a goal a game, they are also conceding over 2 a game, that is not a recipe for success by any means. With 17 games left, the only positive they really have is that the transfer window is always open, it's a long shot for Bull but at this point, I think they have to look around for some young and experienced players and integrate them into the team quickly. At this level now, there seems to be a split between the top 8 or so that are quite well off financially and unfortunately for Margate, it means they are put into situations like this. I can't see them managing to retain their place in this division this year, they're losing games to the teams around them and it's those sides that you have to be picking up points against, whilst snatching the odd point here and there off the top teams if you're going to survive and simply put, this squad isn't capable of that.
Club: Altrincham
Division: National League North
Position: 22nd
Record: W1/D5/L18
Points from Safety: 17
Altrincham's three year stay in the conference came to an end last year with them finishing in 22nd place, missing out on the survival by 5 points, however fans would have been expecting a much better return in the National League North than they've had to endure. Their only win of the season came on October 8th against the side in 21st, Stalybridge Celtic. Again, the problem lies in all areas, less than a goal scored per game and almost 3 goals conceded per game, they're all over the place. Within the last 10 games, they've managed to do better than Margate at least, having managed to pick up 1 point. The only thing Matt Doughty can do, similarly to Nikki Bull, is just try to find players on the fringe of other teams at Step 6 or those impressing at Step 7. They bolster quite a big squad but that clearly isn't translating into success, however, with it being Doughty's first month in charge, his philosophy may be trusted more by the players and they finally may pick up 3 points again. There is surely no chance Altrincham manage to pull this off, especially with how hard the National League has become nowadays, but if they do, this may just be the greatest escape of all time.
Meet the Football Leagues' most in-form strikers? - 15/01/17
Dwight Gayle
It's been a breakthrough year for 27 year old Gayle, who is enjoying the best season of his career since scoring 42 goals on loan at Bishops Stortford, which was back in 2011-12. His talent and goal scoring instinct was always evident at Crystal Palace, however, he found himself in and out of the Starting XI and could never really hit a good spell of form. However, since making the move to Championship side Newcastle United in the summer, he hasn't looked back. Under the leadership of Rafa Benitez, he's thrived, scoring 20 goals in 22 league games (including 21 starts). His career at the North East club started well, getting his first goal in his second game for the club. His confidence on the pitch increased with every game he played and it's shown this season, bagging a trio of braces and 2 hat tricks in first half of the year. If he keeps up this form, there's no doubt that he can hit an incredible 40 goals this season and having joined on a five-year deal in the summer, Newcastle fans can look forward to seeing him up top for the foreseeable future.
Billy Sharp
Now 30 years old, Billy Sharp is still proving to be one of the Football League's most prolific strikers. Since moving back to his local club Sheffield United last season, Sharp has looked back at his best as he managed to score 20 league goals last year. In the first half of this season, he's just 3 goals short of last year's impressive tally, having scored 17 in 27 games. He's proven to be a quality goal scorer wherever he's been, whether it be scoring with his left foot, right foot or head. He's on the homestretch of his career now and I feel stability will be the best option for him, so with that said, I think he'll opt to stay with his hometown side for the majority of the remaining years of his career. Having scored 78 goals in the Championship in his career, keeping him at the club would be the smartest thing Sheffield United could do, if they want to not only get back to the 2nd tier, but stay there.
Josh Morris
Having failed to live up to the hype surrounding him at Blackburn Rovers between 2010 and 2015, in which he never scored a goal for the club, he finally moved on to pastures new, signing for Bradford City last year. Bradford would have felt like this was good business, with Morris managing 8 goals on loan at fellow League One side Fleetwood in the season prior, but it didn't work out, as his debut goal proved to be his only goal. Morris has finally lived up to expectation this season though, and will be grateful for Scunthorpe United for taking a risk on his. He's currently the joint top scorer in League One with Billy Sharp, having found the net 17 times in 27 games. Having been given the faith of the manager, he's become a clinical finisher and a fear for most defences in the league. He's quick, very good technically, and cool as ice in front of goal, all the makings of a quality striker. However, for him to get back to the Premier League, the level he started his career at, he has to produce 2 or 3 more seasons like this. If he can do that, there's no doubt the 25 year old will start to rise back up the Football League.
Omar Bogle
Having been instrumental in returning Grimsby Town to the Football League, having scored a brace in the playoff final against Forest Green, no one would have expected him to perform how he has this year. It's his first year in the Football League and he's showing better quality than those who have played in these leagues for their entire career. Since the 2012-13 season, he has a phenomenal goal scoring record, managing no less than 18 in a season, and despite being two leagues higher than he was then, he's matched that record half way through this campaign. The central striker has incredible pace and when you match this with his superb ball control and hold up play, he's the whole package. His game is very similar to Romelu Lukaku for example and he's no doubt on the radar of many higher league clubs. Bogle is a man to look out for, as he could be the next to make the complete rise from non-league to premier league.
John Akinde
After spending the first seven years of his career struggling to find form in the Football League, Akinde made the decision to drop to the Conference with Alfreton and since then, he hasn't looked back. 18 goals with them earned him a move to current club Barnet, where he finally found a club he not only settled in, but was producing goal after goal for. He's scored 54 league goals over the past two seasons to help his side, not only back into League Two, but also to maintain their place in one of the hardest leagues in the country. This season, he's on pace for a third consecutive season in which he's scored more than 20 league goals, as he had 18 in 26 so far. He's proven to be a nightmare to defend against on his return to the Football League. Similar to Bogle, his game reminds you of watching Lukaku, a powerful pacy forward who can not only hold it up for the wingers, but also take on any defender. There was a chance that he was about to be joined by Bogle earlier in the month but with Grimsby reluctant to sell, every other team will be relieved to not have to see these two up top together. At 27 years old, Akinde is a player with heaps of experience and now he's at the peak of his game, he'd be a great acquisition for any club in League One or League Two.

Club : Chelsea/On loan at Bristol City

Another Chelsea loanee catching the eyes of many this season is Tammy Abraham. The teenage sensation has been with Chelsea since he was 8 and was a instrumental part of the youth sides that won back to back FA Youth Cups and UEFA Youth League titles in 2014/15 and 2015/16. After scoring 74 times in 98 appearances in those two seasons across all competitions at various youth levels, Guus Hiddink rewarded the young man by allowing him to train with the first team in order to aid his progression. He made his Premier League debut on the 11th May 2016 at Anfield where Chelsea drew 1-1 and the week after he made his home debut in a 1-1 draw with champions Leicester City. Despite not scoring, the youngster played with no fear and didn't look out of place amongst the first team superstars. On 5 August 2016, Bristol City signed him on a season long loan and it didn't take long for him to impress as he scored 3 goals in his first 3 games. He found the back of the net 6 times in September which saw him pick up the Championship Player of the Month award. However, the goals have dried up for him lately with his last coming against Barnsley on the 29th October. A goal drought has not affected his confidence though as he's earned himself a reputation for being a workaholic at his loan club and if he keeps working hard, there's no doubt that he'll find himself amongst the goals again. He is averaging a goal every 2 games which has been rather impressive for a player in his first full year of professional football and if he keeps progressing like this year after year, Chelsea may have the next best striker in the world on their books.

Name : Alex Jones
Age : 22

Position : Striker/Winger
Club : Birmingham City/On loan at Port Vale

Birmingham City (2015/Present) - 0Apps/0Goals
Grimsby Town (2015) (Loan) - 6Apps/0Goals
Port Vale (2016/Present) - 18Apps/10Goals
Alex Jones is still relatively inexperienced in professional football but after being at clubs with great youth setups, there's no doubt he's well prepared to impress. Despite impressing at youth levels for West Brom, he was released at the end of the 2014/15 season which was said to have been a massive shock to Jones. However, he managed to bounce back from the first hard moment in his career and after impressing in a trial for Birmingham, he was offered a two-year contract. After good performances at youth level, he was loaned out to Grimsby in November 2015 for a month in which he made six appearances. Despite not scoring, Grimsby wanted to extend the loan as Alex Jones was contributing well in other departments and had formed a good partnership with Patrick Amond. Birmingham rejected the loan extension only to try and send the young striker on loan to the New Zealand A-League which eventually fell through due to FIFA saying the paperwork wasn't completed before the end of the January transfer window, despite recieving the paperwork 3 days prior to the deadline. He spent the rest of the year in the U21's and the reserve team where he was part of the side that lost the Birmingham Senior Cup Final to Solihull Moors. In August 2016, he joined League One side Port Vale on a 5 month loan. He made an instant impact on his football league debut, winning a penalty after only being on the pitch for 2 minutes. Manager Bruno Ribeiro decided against playing Jones directly up front as he saw potential for him out as a right winger. His judgement was wise as on his first game in his new position, Jones bagged himself a brace against Scunthorpe United. He said after this game that he enjoyed playing at right-wing as he was allowed freedom in the final third and hoped that his loan would be extended as he feels he doesn't suit the style of play at his parent club. He's had a superb start to life in League One, notching up 9 league goals in 16 with 6 of these being scored in his first 8 games. At just 22, the young man has great composure and never stops working for his side which is shown by the fact that 4 of his 9 goals have been the winning goal this season. At 6ft1 he's not only quick on the turn but an aerial threat. His finishing is superb and you can tell how clinical he is as his 9 goals have been scored in just 19 shots on goal. He does need to improve his overall game and start getting assists aswell as goals but that will come with experience. Hopefully his loan gets extended as it will help Jones develop his game under a manager who seems to get the best out of him. With his contract expiring in the summer, I'm sure Birmingham will have to convince Jones that he'll be allowed the freedom to play in the final third or he'll turn down the offer and go to a club where he fits into the system.

Ostersunds FK (Loan) (2016) 12Apps

At 23 years old, Jamal Blackman probably left it two years to late to start getting consistent first team football, whether it was his reluctance to go on loan or Mourinho telling him he'd get first team football, who knows. The benefit of him staying at Chelsea though was he had the opportunity to study and work closely with two of the best goalkeepers in the world, Cech and Courtois. He did have a loan spell at Middlesbrough but he failed to break into the first team apart from the famous game against Liverpool in the League Cup where they were defeated 14-13 on penalties with the young keeper saving one and scoring one, which showed his composure under high pressure. On 18th March 2016, he took the decision to go on loan to Swedish side Ostersunds FK, getting his first opportunity to showcase his talent. He helped the recently promoted side to an 8th place finish in their first year in the Swedish top flight. He caught the eye of Gareth Ainsworth and was brought on loan to Wycombe for this season and he's taken his opportunity well. This season he's joint 2nd in clean sheets, keeping 6 in his 17 league games as well as keeping one in the FA Cup yesterday. His recent form has been superb, keeping 3 clean sheets in his last 4 league games, conceding only once. The Englishman seems to keep getting better game after game and is catching the eye of many clubs throughout the EFL. Although he's highly rated at Chelsea, his best move would definitely be to leave the club in the summer. He won't be taking Courtois's place in the Starting XI and sitting on the bench/reserves won't do his career any good. His best move would be to join a club in the EFL and cement himself as a first team keeper.

Plymouth Argyle (2011/14) - 142Apps/16Goals
Barnsley (2014/Present) - 119Apps/29Goals
Like Marcus Maddison, Hourihane had to drop from a big club in the North East down to a lower league to make a name for himself. He had the opportunity to stay at Sunderland but opted to join Ipswich Town as they were managed by his idol, Roy Keane. It was a decision he'd regret as he failed to make an appearance for the Championship side and was released at the end of the season. Plymouth was where he would make a name for himself and after being given his senior debut on the 6th August 2011 against Shrewsbury, he's never looked back. He was a reliable and consistent performer at Plymouth and was rewarded for his hard work and dedication when he was made captain when he was just 21. In his final season at Plymouth, he started to show glimpses that he could not only make goals but score them aswell as he notched up 9 in 53 appearances, missing just one game all year. He was rewarded for his incredible performances at Plymouth when he was signed on the 23rd June 2014 by Barnsley for a fee of £250,000. He hit the ground running at his new club and repaid the trust put in him as in his first two seasons at the club, he had already scored 10 more than he did in 3 years at Plymouth. In December 2015, he was made captain of the club and led by example on the pitch as Barnsley achieved promotion back to the Championship. This season, Conor has proven yet again that stepping up another level in the football pyramid will not affect his performances as he has played a part in 13 of their goals this year (scoring 3, assisting 8). He may not have scored in 12 games but his consistency, creativity and leadership has guided Barnsley into 12th so far, just 6 points off the playoffs. I honestly believe he's the best central midfielder in the Championship, his work rate is superb, his range of passing is incredible and he can make a goal out of nothing. From dead ball situations, you'll do well to find a player as consistent as him at putting quality deliveries into his teammates. I think he'd fit in well at a team like Swansea or Burnley but I really hope he stays at Barnsley, the fans love him, he seems to be really enjoying his football and could become a club legend there.

Gateshead (2013/2014) - 38Apps/14Goals
Peterborough United (2014/Present) - 88Apps/27Goals
It took the young Englishman time to find his feet in the professional game after impressing at youth level but was deemed surplus to requirements at Newcastle on his return from Blyth Spartans, with reserve team manager Willie Donachie saying he has 'a lot to learn'. His quest for first team football took him to Scotland where he failed to break into the first team. He was given his opportunity to shine at Gateshead in August 2013 and having impressed in a trial, he signed for the conference side. The 2013/14 season was the first time he was given a run of games and he didn't disappoint as he notched up 10 goals in 33 games. He started the next season in the best form of his career, scoring 4 in the first 5 games before being signed by Peterborough for a fee of £250,000 plus add-ons of up to £500,000. He's been progressing year on year at the League One club and is now repaying the faith put in him as so far this season he has been involved in half of their goals (scoring 6, assisting 8). Gary Mills said that Maddison was 'a good player but could be selfish at times' but it now seems as though he's become a real team player. His ball control is superb, he's never afraid to take on his marker and if he's through one on one, he rarely misses. Not only is he an unbelievable talent, he also works hard, tracking back and doing the dirty side of the game too and he'll be instrumental in keeping Peterborough's playoff push alive as he can make a goal out of nothing. At 23, he has already had his fair share of ups and downs in his career but if he can keep this form up, he's another player that will no doubt be signed by a better club in the near future.
Under the Radar #1 - 01/12/16
Everyone loves advents calendars to get them excited for Christmas and in light of this, in the build up to Christmas, I will be highlighting the most in-form players outside the Premier League that could be in line for big moves in the new year.

Solihull Moors (2012/15) - 116Apps/66Goals
Grimsby Town (2015/Present) - 73Apps/35Goals
We start with the football league's top scorer and arguably the most in form striker in the country right now, Grimsby Town's Omar Bogle. The young Englishman has been a goalscoring machine since being signed by current Grimsby manager Marcus Bignot back in 2012 for Solihull Moors. Since then, he hasn't looked back, reaching double figures in every season. After a phenomenal 2014/15 season in the National League North where he scored 29 in 41 games, he was signed for an undisclosed fee by Grimsby Town where he didn't get as many goals but his overall game improved massively. His impressive partnership with Padraig Amond led Grimsby to the playoff final where he scored twice in the 3-1 win over Forest Green. Any doubts that he'd struggle without Padraig Amond this year has been erased from everyone's minds as Bogle has thrived on the pressure in League Two this year notching up 16 goals in 18 games. Since being reunited with former manager Marcus Bignot at the start of November, Bogle found new form as he's scored 7 in 4 games propelling Grimsby up to 8th place. His pace is terrorising every defence he plays and if he continues this form there's no doubt he'll get a big move. Barnet are rumoured to have launched a club record £250,000 bid for the in-form striker but it's a move I think he should turn down as Bignot clearly gets the best out of him. At 23, it's best for him to keep developing and he's at the perfect place for that right now. In a few years, there's no doubt we'll see this man tearing defences apart in the Premier League if he avoids injury.

Championship Preview - Part Two - 05/08/16
Ipswich TownAfter coming 7th last year (the 3rd consecutive top 10 finish under Mick McCarthy) Ipswich fans will be hoping to see their side reach the playoffs this year. Ipswich are a side with great strength in depth which is outlined by the fact that they have 4 strikers that are good enough to lead the line at any club in this division but that hasn't stopped McCarthy improving his side as he's brought in Conor Grant from Everton who has been impressive for Everton's U21's. They've brought in youngsters only in this window so far to add a bit more pace and energy to their experienced side and this intention was shown with the signing of Grant Ward from Tottenham. The 21 year old was impressive when on loan at Rotherham last year and if he continues to develop then he can become a top quality winger. Their other signing was Adam Webster from Portsmouth. The 21 year old centre-back was arguably the best defender in League Two last year and like Grant and Ward, if he continues to develop, he could be world class. I really like what McCarthy has done in the transfer window as he seems to be building a squad with the perfect balance of youth and experience and they're another team that should be up there at the end of the season.
Prediction - Playoff Fight
Leeds United
Following an average finish of 13th last season, Garry Monk will be hoping to lead his squad to a playoff fight this year. The Leeds faithful will be itching to fight for a place in the Premier League again after a 12 year absence. The departure of Lewis Cook will not make a promotion fight easier. The 19 year old left for Bournemouth after winning the Football League Young Player of the Year. They'll need players like Stuart Dallas and Toumani Diagouraga to step up their game to the next level if they're to fill the void that Cook leaves. Robert Green has been brought in and he should do a good job this season. It's going to be interesting to see how consistent Kemar Roofe is in the Championship after he produced some stellar performances last year in what was his breakthrough year. His brace against Swansea in the FA Cup showed how good he can be on his day but he'll have to find that level more often this year. Full-back Kyle Bartley should work well with Kemar Roofe and their partnership could prove vital if Leeds are going to find themselves up the top at the end of the season. I think that their not quite strong enough yet to challenge for playoffs but I can see Leeds having a better year than last year.
Prediction - Mid-Table
Newcastle United
It was an awful year for Newcastle last year, a lack of heart, passion, desire and talent was shown by way too many players last year and they need to get back into the Premier League straight away and I think they'll do just that. Newcastle are finally adopting a sensible transfer policy which is what they should have done in the Premier League - sign proven talented players rather than risking spending millions on a flop like Thauvin. Benitez has got rid of a lot of deadweight at the club like Coloccini, Cisse and Taylor and I think Newcastle fans will think it's about time this happened. Some of their signings have been incredible and their talent speaks for itself - Mohamed Diame (Hull), Matt Ritchie (Bournemouth), Dwight Gayle (Crystal Palace) and Ciaran Clark (Aston Villa). With the quality of their squad, I feel like the loss of Wijnaldum won't affect them as it's one less ego at the club. I really can't see anyone else but Newcastle winning this league, it won't be easy but ultimately with Rafa Benitez in charge, he'll keep these players grounded and guide them back to the Premier League.
Prediction - Champions
Norwich City
Norwich just lacked the cutting edge in the final third last year and I feel like with how close they were to staying up last year, they have a really good chance to bounce back up like Newcastle. Losing Nathan Redmond and Gary O'Neil wasn't great for Norwich but I feel as though the replacements they've made will make them stronger. Firstly they've brought in Sergi Canos who was a revelation on loan at Brentford last year where he scored 7 goals and assisting 5. He's a very exciting player to watch as he's very skillful and has a fair bit of pace aswell but the best thing about him is that he's calm in the final third, whether you need him to pick a pass or find the back of the net, he can do it and at only 19, Norwich have acquired a player who has so much time to improve. They've also brought in Alex Pritchard from Tottenham, a 23 year old attacking midfielder with a point to prove. I think he should have been given an opportunity at Tottenham last year but he was loaned out to West Brom before getting injured. In 2014/15 however, he was sensational at Brentford and helped lead them to a 5th place finish and if he replicates that form, him and Canos could prove to be unstoppable. I think they'll be Newcastle's biggest threat next year as long as their strikers are consistent, if they don't beat Newcastle, I'm confident they'll be in the top two.
Prediction - Runner-Up
Nottingham Forest
After a disappointing 16th place finish last year, Nottingham Forest needed to bring in some new players if they're to make a challenge for the playoffs again. They've managed to keep their main core of players which is great as they have some quality in their squad, Henri Lansbury and Britt Assombalonga in particular are match winners on their day. Apostos Vellios being brought in is a questionable decision in my opinion with how poor he was at Everton, I think it would have been more beneficial for them to sign a youngster from a lower division or from their academy. Signing full-back Armand Traore is a great signing, his pace will allow him to get up and down the wing repeatedly and as long as his deliveries are good, I can see him having a great partnership with Assombalonga. I think that Forest will survive but I'm not sure if they're going to be consistent enough to challenge for playoffs this year.
Prediction - Mid-Table
Preston
Preston's first season back in the Championship was one to remember as they recorded a respectable 11th place finish. Simon Grayson will be hoping that his side can push on this year for a better finish and with the signings they've made, I believe that they're moving in the right direction. Tommy Spurr's leadership will be key to keeping the back four solid whereas Eoin Doyle will be hoping to form a solid partnership and if they do, Preston could really be a force to be reckoned with. Also signing is Anders Lindegaard and Callum Robinson, both players are young and have a point to prove and will add energy to the side. Grayson is doing a good job in this window in adding depth to his squad which they'll benefit from if they get an injury crisis. I think that with the higher quality opposition in this league this year, Preston will find it more difficult and will end up near the bottom.
Prediction - Relegation Fight
QPR
The big spenders in the Championship will be hoping to put up a fight for the title this year following a mediocre season which saw them finish only 12th. Losing two of their best players, Leroy Fer and Matt Phillips will make things harder for them but they've bought fairly well this time around. Left-back Jake Bidwell and 22 year old centre-midfielder Jordan Cousins are arguably their two best buys. Cousins has been improving year on year at Charlton and on his day, his powerful runs can be unstoppable but he'll need to add consistency to his game to warrant a start in this team. Unlike Jake Bidwell who has been very consistent in recent years and I can only see him impressing at QPR aswell. A much defender than Traore was, he should really help out QPR's sloppy defence. This side has great strength in depth but I feel as though it will take Hasselbaink some time to find his best XI which will ultimately see them fall just short of the playoffs this year.
Prediction - Mid-Table
Reading
Arguably one of the more inconsistent sides in the division, I feel like Reading haven't made great progress over the last few years. This year it looks like it'll be more of the same frustration for Royals fans after their side have only really made one great signing, bringing in 21 year old midfielder John Swift following a great loan spell at Brentford last year finding the back of the net seven times. They've replaced Hal Robson-Kanu with goal-shy Joseph Mendes from Le Havre, a debatable signing to say the least. They're going to have to reply heavily on Yann Kermorgant to find the goals next season if they are going to impress. They are a side with a few talented players but on the whole Reading have quite an average squad so if no more signings come in, I can see them struggling. It's going to be a difficult season for Reading but I think they'll just survive.
Prediction - Relegation Fight
Rotherham United
Alan Stubbs faces the difficult task of keeping Rotherham in the Championship after a 21st place finish last year. To do this he's added depth to his squad as six new faces will be welcomed into the team, including record signing Jon Taylor from Peterborough. The lightning quick winger will cause defences plenty of problems and with his good finishing, he could prove to be one of the signings of the season. They've heavily bolstered their midfield with the signings of Anthony Forde (Walsall) Jake Forster-Caskey (Brighton-Loan) and Scott Allan (Celtic-Loan). All three midfielders are young and will bring an energy and a spark to Rotherham's game. Forde has been sensational at Walsall in the last two years and if he continues playing so consistently, he's going to go far in the game. Forster-Caskey and Allan have fallen down the pecking order at their respective clubs and come here with a point to prove. I still think that this squad could do with a striker and centre-back in this window as there is a lot of pressure on Danny Ward to get the goals and they are a bit shaky at the back. I think Rotherham will find themselves near the bottom of the table again this year unless further improvements are made.
Prediction - Relegation Fight
Sheffield Wednesday
After a heartbreaking defeat in the playoff final last year, this season will be a real test of character for Carlos Carvahal and his exciting squad. They lost the midfield battle against Hull City at Wembley and looked a bit flat at times but Carvahal has addressed this superbly by bringing in three talented midfielders: Almen Abdi (Watford), Daniel Pudil (Watford) and Will Buckley (Sunderland-loan). Abdi in particular has been solid for Watford in previous years and I can see him working really well with Fernando Forestieri. Buckley and Pudil are trying to reignite their career but will have to be consistent to stay in the first team of this great squad. Steven Fletcher has come back to England joining the Owls on a 4 year deal after his loan at Marseille. I think his experience will be vital as he can help Forestieri improve his game and if they play two up top, their playing styles should compliment each other very nicely. I think it's going to be another strong year for Sheffield Wednesday and they'll more than likely find themselves in the Playoffs again.
Prediction - Playoff Fight
Wigan Athletic
After winning League One last year, Wigan will be out to impress on their return to the Championship. The loss of centre-back Jason Pearce will be a big blow but Gary Caldwell will be hoping new signing Dan Burn can fill the void. Adam Bogdan has been given a chance to prove himself and will have to rediscover his old form if he is going to be the new number one. Nick Powell's move to Manchester United proved to be an awful decision and now that he's returned to Wigan, I think he'll be on a mission to prove to everyone that he is still the player he used to be. To everyone's disappointment, Will Grigg didn't feature at Euro 2016 and will be wanting to pick up where he left off as Wigan will need him to get a tally like last year if they're to do well this year. I think Wigan will have a solid year, they won't be fighting for Playoffs but relegation shouldn't be a worry.
Prediction - Mid-Table
Wolverhampton Wanderers
Wolves were another that suffered from inconsistency last year but with the signings they've made I think they're in for a better finish than 14th this year. Loaning in wingers Joao Teixeira and Helder Costa from Benfica should have fans really excited as both players are quick, skillful and not afraid to take their man on. These two players could quite easily tear this league's defences to shreds if they live up to their potential. This young side will benefit from the experience that former Atletico Madrid centre-back Silvio is bringing to the team. He really needs to take charge at the heart of the back four and lead by example. Nouha Dicko and Joe Mason have to be consistent in front of goal this year for Wolves to mount a challenge in the top half but with the signings that have been made, this squad is shaping up rather nicely and I think their fans are going to see some cracking football. Playoffs might be just too much for this side this year but if they hit form and are firing on all cylinders, they might just surprise a few.

Championship Preview - Part One - 04/08/16
Aston Villa
After arguably the worst season in the club's history last year, Villa fans will be hoping that under Roberto Di Matteo's management, the club can bounce back from their first relegation in 28 years. The 2015 FA Cup finalists have lost key personnel with Idrissa Gueye, Ciaran Clark and Brad Guzan being sold and Charles N'Zogbia and Kieran Richardson being released. However, with how poor the Villa squad played last year, a fresh set of players who actually want to try is needed. The addition of youngsters Aaron Tshibola and Pieluigi Gollini should bring energy into a squad which had none last year. Tshibola isn't the finished article by any means but after impressive performances at Reading last year, the 18 year old seems to be maturing quickly and if given the chance and managed properly, he could prove to be a long lasting replacement for Fabian Delph. Bringing in Bournemouth captain Tommy Elphick is one of the best signings in this league as his experience can prove vital in this long, hard season. After an injury struck Premier League campaign last year, Elphick will want to cement himself as one of the most consistent defenders yet again. I think this is the start of a rebuilding period for Aston Villa so not going up this year wouldn't be the end of the world but within 3 years they should be back up in the Premier League.
Prediction - Playoff Fight
Barnsley
After defeating Millwall 3-1 in the playoff final last year in relatively comfortable fashion, Barnsley will be hoping to establish themselves as a Championship side. It's going to be a hard season for them but they are sticking to their roots and not splashing a lot of cash. So far they've picked up 3 strikers : Kayden Jackson (Wrexham) Stefan Payne (Dover) and Elliot Lee (Released by West Ham). 22 year old Jackson is very similar to Marcus Rashford in the sense that he's not afraid to get on the ball and take a man on but if he's going to make it in the Championship, he has to improve his finishing after only netting 4 times in 36 games last year. However, in Stefan Payne, Barnsley have a player who knows how to find the back of the net. Over the last 3 years in non-league, he's notched up an impressive 67 goals and the 24 year old would suit playing alongside Jackson or Winnall and the partnership formed could be their saving grace this year. Loanee winger Ryan Kent from Liverpool has a lot to prove this year and if he keeps improving as he did last year at Coventry, he could tear defences apart this year. I wouldn't expect Barnsley to be in the top half this year but if they bring in a few experienced players then mid-table could be achieved.
Prediction - Relegation Fight
Birmingham City
After an average season last year in which Birmingham finished in 10th place, fans will be hoping that their team can put up a fight for the playoffs this year. With a really experienced squad and strength in depth, there is no reason this side can't be up there as long as they find consistency. After impressing on loan from Derby last year in the 2nd half of the season, Gary Rowett has brought in full-back Ryan Shotton alongside defender Daniel Cleary in an attempt to bolster his defensive options. Midfielder Robert Tesche has been signed from Nottingham Forest and seems to be happy and highly motivated following the move and claims that he thinks the manager will be able to get the best out of him. Birmingham are reportedly still after highly rated striker Che Adams but it looks like their going to have to spend a fair amount to take him away from the League 1 favourites. With the new signings they've made whilst retaining key players, I this Birmingham will find themselves in a fight for the playoffs this year and have a great chance of making it to the Premier League.
Prediction - Playoff Fight
Blackburn Rovers
An awful season last year saw Blackburn finish in a disappointing 15th place and Owen Coyle will have to improve this squad if they're going to get anywhere near the playoffs. Bolstering the attacking options was needed and has been dealt with well with the acquisition of Danny Graham and four-time SPL winner Anthony Stokes. Both of these strikers are looking to reignite their careers as Stokes was deemed surplus to requirements at Celtic and Graham has not been at his best since leaving Swansea. After losing 2 solid defenders in Grant Hanley and Tommy Spurr, Brighton captain Gordon Greer has been brought in. His experience should prove vital in fixing the leaky defence that they had last year. There is plenty of talent in this squad which is why they were so frustrating to watch last year, if Owen Coyle gets the best out of his key players, they could be up there come the end of the season.
Prediction - Mid-Table
Brentford
Since their promotion to the Championship in 2013/14, Brentford have not looked back as they finished 5th in 2014/15 and 9th in 2015/16. This year they'll be hoping to keep fighting for playoffs again under Dean Smith's management and maybe pull off an unexpected promotion. They've brought in one of the Football League's most entertaining players in Romaine Sawyers. With more refinement, this young man could be in the Premier League soon, skillful, fast, energetic and with an eye for goal, Sawyers is going to fit right in alongside Alan Judge. After losing left-back Jake Bidwell to QPR, Leicester youngster Callum Elder has been brought in on a season-long loan. With Fulham taking goalkeeper Button from them, Smith has had to call on Southend goalkeeper Dan Bentley to keep the goals to a minimum. Another young signing is 23 year old defender John Egan from Gillingham who will benefit from working alongside his more experienced defensive partners. With a relatively young squad, Brentford fans are definitely going to be watching some entertaining football this year and I think they'll surprise everyone this year.
Prediction - Playoff Fight
Brighton
Brighton were the surprise package last year as their long unbeaten streak never looked like it was going to end, however when it did, a sloppy 2nd half of the season saw them just miss out on automatic promotion before a heartbreaking playoff semi-final defeat to Sheffield Wednesday. Not a lot of transfer activity shows that Chris Hughton believes that his side can bounce back and improve on last year. 19 year old Motherwell centre-back Ben Hall has been signed but will initially have to prove his worth in the under-21's meaning that loanee Glenn Murray is the only proper first team improvement made. With it looking like they've missed out on Alex Pritchard, this season will be a massive test mentally for this squad and I'm not sure if they'll find themselves in the same position as last year. Despite the experience in this squad, I can't see them finishing in the playoffs this time around as their are a few teams who I think are stronger right now.
Prediction - Mid-Table
Bristol City
Bristol City really struggled in the first half of the season last year as they found themselves in the relegation zone before Lee Johnson came in and saved them by leading them to 18th position. In order to put up a better fight this campaign, they have not held back in the transfer window, bringing in seven new players : Adam Matthews (Sunderland-Loan), Ivan Lucic (Bayern Munich), Gary O'Neil (Norwich), Lee Tomlin (Bournemouth), Hordur Magnusson (Juventus), Josh Brownhill (Preston) and Diro De Girolamo (Sheffield United). Bringing in players as experienced as O'Neil and Tomlin show the initiative of the club and that they want to move forward and challenge higher up the table. Bringing in Magnusson and Lucic should be a massive boost for fans as the club is attracting players from heavyweight clubs. Keeping Bobby Reid at the club is a massive boost and if him and Brownhill can form a solid partnership then Bristol City can dominate most games with those two dictating the pace. I think they'll find themselves in a much better position than last year but they still are just short of the quality needed to mount a playoff challenge.
Prediction - Mid-Table
Burton Albion
Impressive successive promotions have seen Burton Albion get into the Championship and their fans will believe anything is possible as their fairytale story continues this weekend. Like Bristol City, the Brewers squad has been substantially bolstered with addition of seven players. Crucially Nigel Clough has kept the core of the squad the same and these players will thrive off the belief of their manager however, he has also made smart signings. The quality improves massively in the Championship and bringing in the experience of Kyle McFadzean and Ben Turner will really help the inexperienced members of the squad adjust to the pace of the Championship. These two centre-backs could also build a formidable partnership as they are both solid in the air however a fast forward would be the downfall of those two. Midfielder Lee Williamson and journeyman striker Chris O'Grady will be relied on heavily in the attacking department to get the job done in the close games. I think that this side has the potential to do well and I can see them adjusting to the Championship quite well and a strong finish will keep them up.
Prediction - Mid-Table
Cardiff City
After missing out on the playoffs by one place last year, Cardiff fans will be hoping to see their side take the step up and get into the playoffs this time. Welsh full-back Jazz Richards is a really decent signing as he offers a lot going forward as well as defensively. His pace will allow him to get up and down the wing and cause the opposition full-back all kinds of problems when Cardiff are on the attack. Danish striker Kenneth Zohore impressed enough to on loan last year to get the permanent switch but will have to get on the scoresheet more next year if Cardiff are going to make a title challenge. Lex Immers did a great job on loan last season and will hope to carry on his form into this year. With players like Gunnarsson, Whittingham and Pilkington controlling the midfield, Cardiff should win the midfield battle in most games however, it is their work in the final third that needs to be improved if they are going to make a playoff push. I think that Cardiff will find themselves up their again however, how high up they are depends on the consistency of their strikers.
Prediction - Mid-Table
Derby County
I thought last season would have been the year Derby got back into the Premier League, however, inconsistency saw them only manage 5th before losing in the Playoff Semi-Final to Playoff Winners Hull City. Nigel Pearson has been brought in with the goal to get Derby back into the Premier League and with no signings being made so far, it looks as though if any additions are going to be made to the squad then they're going to happen at the end of the transfer window. They've managed to keep almost all of their squad so with a few additions I can see them being in the playoffs yet again and if they find more consistency, they might challenge for the title.
Prediction - Playoff Fight
Fulham
Fulham barely survived last season finishing in a poor 20th position and with the loss of key players like Ross McCormack, George Williams, Moussa Dembele and Maarten Stekelenberg, I think that this club will be around the same position this time around also. Their signings have been decent but they're still quite a way from being a quality team in this league again. Sone Aluko will have to find some consistency in front of goal if he is going to replace the void filled by the loss of McCormack and Dembele. Defensively they've done well with the addition of both Kalas (loan) and Scott Malone however, they need a quality striker if they're going to get away from a relegation fight. They do have some quality players and experience but they really need to do more in this transfer window if they're to survive and will probably have to take a chance on either a youngster from the academy or a youngster from the league's below to add some flair to the squad which George Williams brought. I think it's going to be a long year for Fulham fans and if they're are no more signings, their club will have to fight to survive.
Prediction - Relegation Fight
Huddersfield Town
Huddersfield had a poor year last year where they only managed a 19th place finish and to ensure a repeat of this doesn't occur, they've splashed the cash this summer including a new transfer record signing - Christopher Schindler - 26 year old centre-back who was formerly the captain of hometown club 1860 Munich. To further improve their defence they signed Jon Stankovic from Borussia Dortmund II. They've also loaned in 4 players including the highly rated Kasey Palmer from Chelsea who needs to prove himself this season if he's going to catch the eye of Conte. They have strength in depth in midfield however, they still need to bring in a striker in order to help out Nakhi Wells. I think it'll be too much for Huddersfield to stay up this year unless they sign some quality players.
Prediction - Relegated
Super Sunder Preview - 03/10/15
Sunday 4th October has the potential to be the best day of football so far this year with great rivalries and top 2 face-offs across multiple countries. I share my predictions on who will be victorious in the main games on what will no doubt be a SUPER Sunday.
Charlton Athletic vs Fulham - Kick Off : 12:00
17th place Charlton host 14th place Fulham in Sunday's early kick off. The hosts come into this game looking to end a run of three straight defeats and they will be hoping they can pick up their first league win since August 22nd. The visitors enter this game hoping to prove that their 3-0 defeat to Wolves yesterday was just a fluke. Charlton Athletic will be happy to welcome defender Alou Diarra back from suspension in contrast to Fulham who will miss midfielder Tom Cairney as he starts a 3 match suspension following a straight red at home to Wolves. 18 year old Karlan Ahearne-Grant could force his way into the Charlton starting XI having scored his first league goal after coming off the bench against Cardiff. In the last nine games with Fulham at the Valley, Charlton fans will be happy to see the stats as they've won 4, drawn 4 and lost 1 where they've scored 13 and conceded 8. Fulham have faced more shots on target than any other team in the Championship this season with 50 already been fired at them so Charlton may be able to take advantage of the sloppy defending by Fulham. The dangerman for Fulham is Ross McCormack. The striker has six goals in his last seven games and will be looking to extend his fantastic record on Sunday. Charlton need striker Igor Vetokele to start finding the net and the speed of the powerful forward could threaten Fulham and I think Berg Gudmunsson's creativity from midfield will be crucial if the hosts are going to get a result.
Woody Predicts : Charlton Athletic 2-1 Fulham
Hamilton Academical vs Celtic - Kick Off : 12:30
New Douglas Park plays host to a thrilling tie where 4th place Hamilton face a difficult yet achievable task when they host 2nd place Celtic. The reigning champions find themselves in an unfamiliar 2nd due to the form of Aberdeen and they will be hoping to not drop anymore points this year as they aim for another title. Hamilton will be delighted with their start under their new manager following the departure of Alex Neil towards the end of last season. Hamilton come into this game with confidence having picked up two successive wins and with Celtic's current inconsistency they could make it three on the bounce. Accies midfielder Darian MacKinnon is pushing for a return to the starting XI after missing the Kilmarnock win whereas Danny Redmond and Micheal Devlin remain sidelined. Celtic defender Efe Ambrose misses the game with suspension and they also are likely to be without another defender in Joso Simunovic due to a twisted ankle and experienced midfielder Charlie Mulgrew remains on the sidelines. With Ronny Deila clearly working on his defence following the departures of Virgil Van Dijk and Jason Denayer and with another two defenders currently out, Hamilton have a chance to cause them real problems in this department of the game. Ali Crawford is the player to watch and he will be hoping to add to his 3 goals this season and he will have confidence due to the defensive woes at Celtic. Celtic need their bigger player to find some consistency and up their performances if they are going to get a result. The Hamilton defence will have a tough ask as they have to keep clinical finisher Leigh Griffiths, who has 11 goals already this season, out the game.
Woody Predicts : Hamilton Academical 1-1 Celtic
Everton vs Liverpool - Kick Off : 13:30
Goodison Park hosts the 225th Merseyside Derby and the first post-Steven Gerrard one. Everton come into this game in a solid 5th position whereas Liverpool find themselves down in 9th with manager Brendan Rodgers under increasing pressure. The home team come into this game unbeaten in their last four and having picked up a superb 3-2 win away at West Brom having been 2-0 down. The visitors come into this game having drawn 1-1 against FC Sion in the Europa League and are unbeaten in three in all competitions. Everton could have both John Stones and Seamus Coleman back from their respective knee and hamstring injuries in what will be a massive boost for the home side however, Roberto Martinez is unlikely to have Muhamed Besic available and winger Kevin Mirallas is suspended. For Liverpool, Christian Benteke could return if he passes the late fitness assessment having missed the last three games with a hamstring injury but Rodgers will not have Roberto Firmino, Jordan Henderson and Dejan Lovren as all remain sidelined. Everton have failed to win in the last nine attempts against Liverpool and will be hoping to end that winless run tomorrow and have only won 1 of the last 17 league meetings between these sides which came at Goodison Park in October 2010. There hasn't been a red card in this fixture in December 2011 so maybe that run will end as this fixture has seen more red cards than any other. Despite being unbeaten in four, Martinez's side have failed to record back to back wins since April. Liverpool have only won one of their last 8 games where they've drawn three and lost four. The dangermen for Liverpool are Phillipe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge. Sturridge has six goals in his last eight games against their rivals. Coutinho has arguably been Liverpool's best player this season and the number 10 will be a constant danger if he gets into the pockets between the two defensive midfielders and the back four. I'd expect to see Martinez tell McCarthy to man mark Coutinho and keep him out the game. For Everton, they will look to Lukaku and Barkley to lead them to victory. It seems like it's Barkley's breakout year this season as he has looked in fine form so far this season and could score from range at any time whereas the powerful and pacey Lukaku will be a constant threat to the Liverpool defence and will be key to the success of the Everton side this season and I think he'll grab a goal or two.
Woody Predicts : Everton 2-1 Liverpool
Ajax vs PSV Eindhoven - Kick Off : 13:30
The Amsterdam Arena hosts what should be a thrilling game in the Dutch Eredivise. Ajax are currently top and are unbeaten in the first seven games of the season having picked up 19 points. Their visitors are the reigning champions who find themselves 4th after 7 games, 5 points behind the leaders already. Ajax have looked sensational at home in particular this season where they've scored 9 and conceded 0. In contrast, PSV have looked sloppy away from home with 1 win 2 draws and 1 conceded. They can take the positive that they have found the net 10 times on their travels but have conceded 5 which has been their downfall. Six players have found the net so far for Ajax this season which shows the talent in this side. The main dangerman for Ajax is 20 year old striker Anwar El-Ghazi who has picked up 7 of Ajax's 18 goals so far and PSV's defenders with have a hard job in defending him. PSV looked outstanding when playing against Manchester United in the Champions League and they will need to put in a repeat performance if they're to get a result in this game. PSV have had 7 goalscorers this season which shows the quality of their team similar to their hosts. 25 year old striker Luuk De Jong has 7 goals in 7 games this season for PSV and he will definitely be the man that the Ajax defenders will have to mark closely.
Woody Predicts : Ajax 2-1 PSV Eindhoven
Swansea City vs Tottenham Hotspur - Kick Off : 16:00
The Liberty Stadium hosts what should be a cracking tie. The Swans find themselves in 11th place having been without a win in three games so they'll be hoping to correct this form against an inspired Tottenham side who are unbeaten in six in the league and have picked up three successive league wins and find themselves in 7th place following Crystal Palace's win. Their 4-1 win against Manchester City last weekend will no doubt give them confidence to get a result away at Swansea. The visitors will be without Son Heung-min after he picked up a foot injury against Man City and Danny Rose is also unlikely to feature after picking up a nasty injury to his hand against Monaco on Thursday. The Tottenham boss will be happy to have midfield trio, Dembele, Mason and Bentaleb available for selection yet again. Swansea boss Garry Monk will be facing the decision of whether to give veteran midfielder Leon Britton a start however, he has no injury worries. Swansea have failed to beat Spurs in any of their eight meetings since they were promoted to the Premier League and other than a draw between these two sides in their first meeting in December 2011 but since then, Tottenham have won the last seven. The last time Tottenham won four in a row was in January 2014 where their last victory was a 3-1 win at the Liberty Stadium so will history repeat itself or will Swansea beat Tottenham for the first time. Swansea's dangermen are Montero, Gomis and Ayew who have all looked quality this season and Tottenham will have to defend as well as they did against Man City if they are going to stop them from leading the Swans to victory. For Tottenham, they will be hoping Harry Kane won't look back having got his first league goal vs Man City and will find his form from last season and grab a few in this game. Swansea will also have to watch out for the much improved Erik Lamela who has played a part in all of Tottenham's last 3 league goals (scoring 1 and assisting 2). Finally, it'll be interesting to see what impact youngster Dele Alli will have on this game after making such a strong start to his Premier League career.
Woody Predicts : Swansea City 2-2 Tottenham Hotspur
Arsenal vs Manchester United - Kick Off : 16:00
The Emirates Stadium hosts potentially the game of the day depending on who you support. Van Gaal's United side come to the Emirates having won 3 on the bounce which sees them top of the league whereas the hosts came back from the 2-0 defeat away at Chelsea by picking up an impressive 5-2 win away at Leicester. However in midweek, these sides had mixed fortunes in the Champions League with Arsenal losing yet again as Olympiakos picked up a 3-2 win at the Emirates to shock Arsenal whereas United defeated Wolfsburg 2-1 in an average performance. Arsenal are without Laurent Koscielny and Mathieu Flamini due to a hamstring injury and Mikel Arteta will miss the fixture due to a dead leg. The visitors have Michael Carrick back whereas fellow midfielder Ander Herrera is a doubt for the game. Manchester United are unbeaten in their last four visits to Arsenal (Won 2, Drawn 2). United have never gone five games unbeaten at Arsenal in the Premier League era so that could be a boost for Arsenal however, the Gunners worst Premier League win percentage is against Manchester United at 24%. United have kept four clean sheets so far this season and have looked good at the back this year and Arsenal need a home win as they've only had two in their last last seven games and one this season. Manchester United's dangermen are Anthony Martial and Juan Mata. Mata played one of the best passes I've ever seen when he set up the winning goal for Chris Smalling against Wolfsburg and Anthony Martial has made a huge impact scoring 4 goals in 5 games and Jamie Redknapp recently said that he is 'the best 19 year old since Lionel Messi'. I'm not sure if he'll ever be as good as Messi but with his pace, power and clinical finishing as well as his understanding of the game shows that he will go far and it would of been nice to see him come to Arsenal rather than Man United. Chris Smalling has played well recently and looks to be becoming a great leader for Manchester United which is probably why they have kept so many clean sheets this year. Wayne Rooney goal last weekend may have helped him grow in confidence and he could grab a goal at the Emirates. Arsenal's dangermen are Alexis Sanchez and Theo Walcott. Sanchez got a hat trick last weekend and scored in mid week against Olympiakos and he looks like the player he was last season and he is the most likely player to score for the Gunners. Walcott has scored 12 goals in his last 13 league starts however I wouldn't be surprised if Giroud started in order to emulate what Gomis and Ayew did by bullying Daley Blind but I'm sure Walcott would also be able to do the same. Santi Cazorla has more Premier League assists then anyone else since his debut in August 2013 with 32 and I expect Man United's midfielder to try to close down the little Spaniard to stop him playing key passes.
Woody Predicts : Arsenal 3-2 Manchester United
Bayern Munich vs Borussia Dortmund - Kick Off : 16:30
The Allianz Arena hosts the biggest game in Germany as 1st place Bayern hosts 2nd place Dortmund. It's the match between the two unbeaten sides in this country where the home side have won all seven scoring 23 where they've only conceded 3 whereas Dortmund have found the net 21 times and conceded 6 in their 5 wins and 2 draws. Bayern look like they mean business this season and so did Dortmund for the first five games however, in the last two they have looked a bit rusty and have failed to get 3 points away at Hoffenheim and at home to Darmstadt, two sides that they should beat. Their fans will be hoping that their side can get back to winning ways and their is no better game than this to find their form. The main dangermen for the hosts are Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Muller who have 21 goals between them already this season with Lewandowski picking up 13 of these. The Doortmund defence will have to keep him at bay throughout all of the 90 minutes otherwise they might meet the same fate that Wolfsburg did when the powerful Polish forward netted 5 times in 9 minutes. Even if they contain him, Thomas Muller will be a constant threat and he's shown before that he can find the back of the net from anywhere. They will also have to be mindful of Gotze, Robben and Ribery and even then other players could score so that just shows the quality you have to deal with when you play Guardiola's side. For Dortmund, four players have scored 5 or more goals this season, these are : Shinji Kagawa (5), Marco Reus (6), Henrik Mkhitaryan (8) and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (12). The strong Bayern defence will have a hard job to keep the front four of Dortmund at bay and will be relying on their midfielders to help them out. The pace of Reus and Aubameyang will surely be used at every opportunity in order to outdo the Bayern defenders and I'm sure this game will have lots of goals in it.
Woody Predicts : Bayern Munich 3-3 Borussia Dortmund
Atletico Madrid vs Real Madrid - Kick Off : 19:30
After being treated to plenty of thrilling games during the day, you can sit down and relax at night and watch the Madrid derby. The unbeaten Real will be hoping for their first Madrid derby win in two seasons and will be looking to get revenge for the 4-0 thrashing they received here in February. The hosts enter this game having fallen to two successive defeats against Villareal and Benfica however their coach Diego Simeone has said it does not concern him because 'We have a lot of young players in the team and the first 10 games were going to be very difficult'. It'll be interesting to see if his younger players can rise to the occasion in a very tough fixture both physically and mentally for them. The injured Koke will be a big miss for the hosts whereas Real will have both Sergio Ramos and Gareth Bale available for selection yet again however Benitez will be without the world-class number 10, James Rodriguez but I believe the return of Bale will soften the blow. The main talking point around this game is whether Ronaldo can get the goal which will make him Real's all time top goalscorer as he will overtake Raul's 323 goals. The main dangermen for Real are Benzema and Ronaldo as they have 18 goals combined this year with Ronaldo already on 11 goals. The full-backs will have a hard job keeping Ronaldo and Bale out the game and Benzema will be a nightmare for the centre-backs to defend. Atletico Madrid will be hoping for flamboyant winger Antoine Griezmann to create plenty and cause Real's full-backs all kind of problems whereas striker Fernando Torres looks to be growing in confidence again and this could be the game that he shows how good he is.
Woody Predicts : Atletico Madrid 1-3 Real Madrid
AC Milan vs Napoli - Kick Off : 19:45
The San Siro hosts an exciting looking match between two of the most well supported teams in Italy. Five years ago, these two teams were fighting for the Serie A title but in recent years they have struggled and at this point of the season, this is a mid-table match-up with the hosts currently occupying 11th and the visitors find themselves 10th after they've both played six games. Milan have worryingly only managed to find the net on 8 occasions whereas Napoli have scored 12 and are currently on 5 game unbeaten streak after being defeated on the opening day. Milan will be hoping to prove that they are on the rise again as they look to bounce back after suffering a shock 1-0 defeat to 14th place Genoa last weekend. The dangermen from the home side are strikers Carlos Bacca who has 3 of AC Milan's 8 goals and Mario Balotelli who has just 1 goal but on his day is unplayable which is what he showed sometimes when playing for Manchester City and he is aiming to reignite his career at the Italian club. The dangermen for the visitors are Gonzalo Higuain, Lorenzo Insigne and Jose Callejon who have 12 goals combined this year. Higuain is a natural goalscorer and they did very well to keep hold of him and the former Real Madrid man can beat any defender in the air. He'll be relying on the pace of Insigne and Callejon, who have 3 goals each, to make runs past him and put balls into the box for him to volley home or head into the back of the net.
Woody Predicts : AC Milan 1-2 Napoli
Paris Saint-Germain vs Marseille - Kick Off : 20:00
The latest kick off that I will be predicting has the potential to be one of the most one sided games of the day but it is still a match-up between two of the most popular teams in France. The unbeaten PSG go into the game as clear favourites as they host the struggling Marseille who are currently 16th and without a win in 3. There should be plenty of goals in this game as PSG are the second highest scorers with 17 and despite the lack of points, Marseille find themselves as the 3rd top goalscorers with 13 goals. The dangermen for the hosts are surely the strikers in the form of Edison Cavani and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The deadly duo have 13 goals between them already with 8 and 5 goals respectively. The Marseille defence will have a difficult task in keeping these two out of the the game but they both possess the ability to score from any distance and I'd expect to see at least one of them to get on the scoresheet. I'd also expect to see Di Maria have a big impact on the game as he looks like the player he was at Real Madrid and Blaise Matuidi is also a threat with his strength and power. For Marseille they will need striker Michy Batshuayi to be on top of his game if they're going to get anything from this game. He already has 5 goals this season and will need a few to help his side get at least a point. The main thing for Marseille to accomplish is to not get another red card, they've already picked up 3 in the first 8 games and that has been the deciding factor in the outcome of some of their games this year.
Woody Predicts : Paris Saint-Germain 4-2 Marseille Ipswich Town vs Birmingham City
Ipswich Form : DWWWLLW
Birmingham Form : WDDWWL
Fifth place play seventh in this weekend's Friday night Championship game. Ipswich Town bounced back from their 5-1 defeat to Reading last Friday with a 1-0 away win at Leeds and will hope to add another 3 points to their tally with a win in their first home game this month. Birmingham started the season with a 5 game unbeaten run before losing away on Tuesday night at Nottingham Forest and will be hoping to bounce back by taking 3 points at Ipswich. The hosts have scored 12 in their first 7 league games in comparison with the visitors 11 goals in 6 therefore showing that both teams are likely to score. The worry for Ipswich is that they have conceded 12 goals whereas Birmingham have looked good defensively having only conceded 7. If Ipswich defend as poorly as they did away at Reading a week ago then they could be in for another big defeat and they'll have a tough task in scoring against a Birmingham side that have kept a clean sheet in 1/3 of their games so far. Birmingham boss Gary Rowett benefits from having a fully fit side for tonight's game whereas, despite Mick McCarthy having midfielder Cole Skuse and striker Freddie Sears after they recovered from midweek injuries, he could be without midfielder Ryan Fraser who will be assessed after picking up a knock against Leeds. The fact that Ipswich are unbeaten in their last seven against Birmingham will be like music to the ears of Ipswich fans however records are made to be broken so it doesn't guarantee a good result. The home side will be hesitant of letting their visitors shoot as Birmingham have the best conversion rate in the league as of yet, scoring from 22% of shots. The players to look out for in this game are Sears and Mcgoldrick in particular for Ipswich as they have 7 goals between them in all competitions so far and the worrying thing for Birmingham is that even if they shut these two down, 9 players have scored for Ipswich this season showing how dangerous they are attacking wise. For Birmingham, Clayton Donaldson has been the star man as he leads the Championship assist charts with 4 assists and has also contributed 3 goals. Similar to Ipswich though, goals have come from many options with 9 players also contributing for the Midlands club in all competition. Overall, I'm predicting a goal fest tonight in what should be a great advertisement for the Championship as two evenly matched clubs face off at 7:45 and it would be well worth tuning in to tonight.
Woody Predicts : 2-2
Grimsby Town vs Tranmere Rovers
Grimsby Form : DWWLDDLWWD
Tranmere Form : WWDWLLDDWD
Seventh play Eighth in a highly anticipated game in the Conference tonight. Grimsby finished 3rd last year and 4th in the two years prior to that yet fell to disappointment in the playoffs so this year they'll be aiming to rectify that disappointment. They host recently relegated Tranmere Rovers who will also be looking to bounce back into the Football League straight away. When looking at their form, it's a tale of two patterns however, when you look at what's next in the pattern for both teams, you'll see that a loss is due for both so due to the impossibility of this scenario, the form pattern has no bearing on the result. The last time these sides met was in 2009 in a League Cup tie which saw Tranmere 4-0 victors on that day however, with both sides now in the same league, I'm sure we'll see a more even game. Grimsby have managed to find the net on 22 occasions so far this season, more than any other team in the league, proving that they can be a constant threat to teams whereas Tranmere have scored 8 less goals than their hosts with the knowledge that Grimsby have scored just as many goals at home as they have in total. With that in mind, Grimsby are yet to play a team in the top 5 this season so the game tonight against Tranmere will surely be there biggest test this campaign. The hosts are likely to name an unchanged squad for the third game in a row as they have a clean bill of health. Tranmere Rovers however may be missing arguably their most consistent performer in Liam Ridehalgh as fans have questioned whether he is suffering from injury having missed the game on Tuesday however this is just a rumour and he may well be in the line up for tonight's game. There is a slight chance they will be without Andy Mangan and Jay Harris for the game after they both picked up knocks on Tuesday night however there is a high chance that they could still feature. Both sides have equal home and away records therefore pointing the results most likely outcome to be a draw. The key players for the hosts are strikers Bogle and Amond who have notched up 13 goals between them however, Tranmere will also have to be weary of Monkhouse as the midfielder already has 3 goals this season so the visitors will have to defend well. For the visitors, midfielder Jay Harris and striker James Norwood are vital to the success of the team. Norwood is a clinical finisher who has played very well over the years for Forest Green and is capable of being a match winner, so the Grimsby defenders will have to be on top form in order to shut him down quick and not let him have a glimpse of goal. Overall, this is another game that I see both teams scoring in however I think the form of the Grimsby forwards will prove to be the deciding factor in the result in this match.
Woody Predicts : 3-2
Sacked in September! - 17/09/15
When a manager gets sacked so early on in the season, the question is always asked whether the manager should be given more time. With four managerial departures already by the 17th September, I give my verdict on whether I feel the decisions were rash or justified.
Dave Robertson (Peterborough United) - September 6th
Clubs : Peterborough United 2015
Appointed : 21st February 2015
Sacked : 6th September 2015
2014/15 results : 6 Wins
4 Draws
4 Losses
22/42 points
2015/16 results : 2 Wins
1 Draw
6 Losses
4/18 points
Becoming manager of Peterborough United was Dave Robertson's first venture into management and he started off brightly. He became only the second ever Peterborough manager to win all 3 of his opening games having beaten Bradford, Sheffield United and Leyton Orient before adding a 4th successive win at Doncaster. He helped Peterborough to a 9th place finish, just 6 points off the playoffs after he achieved a 43% win rate to round off his maiden term in management. He was rewarded for his job last season by being given a 3 year contract to stay at the club. He had a good start to the season picking up 2 wins in 3 games in all competitions however, those were his last wins as he drew 1 and lost 3 league games as well as 2 cup games therefore causing to board to terminate his contract. After scoring 9 goals in 9 games, it's clear to see that attacking wise there was potential but having let in 16 in as many showed the problem was the defending. Overall, because it's his first job in management and the first full-time job he had in football, I think it was a rash decision from the board and that he should have been given more time. Robertson and Monk for Swansea are similar in a way however Swansea gave Monk time even when results didn't come and now they are seeing their side have good success in the Premier League. I know Robertson wasn't a club legend like Monk however, for a new manager it takes time to get their philosophy across to the team so to sack a manager who is still finding their feet in the league however, with results not coming in and maybe due to pressure from fans, the board chose to sack him. I know teams can start the season bad on occasions but having only been 6 games in, there was plenty of time for him to turn it around with 40 games still to be played and even though their caretaker manager started with a win, there is no guarantee that sacking Robertson was the right decision and I believe that he surely should have been given more time.
Paul Dickov (Doncaster Rovers) - 8th September
Clubs : Oldham Athletic 2010-13
Doncaster Rovers 2013-15
Appointed : 20th May 2013
Sacked : 8th September 2015
2013/14 results : 11 Wins
11 Draws
24 Losses
44 points
2014/15 results : 16 Wins
13 Draws
17 Losses
61 points
2015/16 results : 3 Wins
3 Draws
3 Losses
6/18 points
This is an odd sacking in my opinion from the Doncaster board. The 2013/14 season saw Paul Dickov fail to keep his side in the Championship as they were relegated on the final day on goal difference yet the board trusted that he was the one to take them back up. After guiding them to a 13th place finish last year, you'd have thought that if Doncaster were going to sack him it would have happened then, right? Wrong. They kept Dickov in charge and after picking up 3 wins, draws and losses in all competitions with 1 win 3 draws and 2 losses coming in the league alone seeing them pick up 1/3 of the points available. For him to get sacked after that seems a little strange to me in all honesty. You could say it's because of the 3 goals which they scored in the league in 9 games however, they did only concede 5 goals therefore showing that their defence is good, however they just needed work on the attacking side of the game. I think that if they gave Dickov a bit more time then the goals would come. All it takes is for one striker to hit form and get 20-30 goals and it could win them games and if the defence stays as solid as they have been so far then Doncaster could have had a good season and thought for the playoffs and it's for this reason that I believe that the board have made the wrong decision. In an illustrious career which saw him score 101 goals in 421 games as a striker, Dickov clearly knows what it takes to score and if given more time, he could have worked with the strikers to help them find their feet in front of goal. Overall, if you're going to stick with a manager who gets the club relegated and has a mid-table finish, then why sack him after an average start to the season? Maybe they were hoping to see their side go up this year however, all it takes is some good form in the upcoming months and Doncaster could have rose up to the top end of the league so that's why I find the decision to sack Dickov to be odd.
Darren Kelly (Oldham Athletic) - 12th September
Clubs : Oldham Athletic 2015
Appointed : 4th May 2015
Sacked : 12th September 2015
2015/16 results : 1 Win
4 Draws
4 Losses
7/18 points
After looking at the results at first glance you'd think that the decision to sack Darren Kelly was quite justified however, when you look deeper and see that they are only 4 points off the playoffs, it does make you question why he was sacked. They lost to Middlesbrough and Shrewsbury in the League Cup and Johnstone's Paint Trophy respectively and although they would clearly be disappointed to exit the cups early on, surely getting 1 win 4 draws and 2 losses in the league makes up for that, clearly not. Despite an 11.1% win rate, you have to remember that this is the 36 year old's first managerial job and as they were willing to give him a chance at managing them, it does make you think why they would sack him after only 9 games. His side have clearly showed a resilience to lose in managing to pick up 4 draws however, you could argue that they should have held on to the 1-0 leads they had at home to Shrewsbury and away to Bury. With no win since August 15th and 2 losses on the bounce with 2 goals scored and 7 conceded have seemed to put the nail in the coffin for the new manager. Overall I can't understand why Darren Kelly has been sacked, it could be a lack of wins, the number of goals conceded in the last two games or the early departure in the cup competitions. I believe that this decision is as rash as they get, as in my opinion, if you're willing to take the chance on giving someone their first job in management then it is my belief that you should give them enough time to get their philosophy across to their players and the Oldham board have not done this. Hopefully Darren gets more of an opportunity at another club and maybe he'll join the final team which we discuss. League One Chairman's seem ruthless this year with 3 of the 4 manager's sacked all come from the third-tier of the English game so if your club is struggling in this league so far then expect a managerial change to be on the horizon.
Neil Aspin (Halifax Town) - 17th September
Clubs : Harrogate Town 2005-09
Halifax Town 2009-15
Appointed : 28th April 2009
Sacked : 17th September 2015
2009/10 results : W-30 D-10 L-2 Pts-100
2010/11 results : W-30 D-8 L-4 Pts-98
2011/12 results : W-21 D-11 L-10 Pts-74
2012/13 results : W-21 D-12 L-9 Pts-75
2013/14 results : W-22 D-11 L-13 Pts-77
2014/15 results : W-17 D-15 L-14 Pts-66
2015/16 results : W-1 D-2 L-7 Pts-5/30
Loyalty is the first thing that comes to mind when talking about Neil Aspin. He showed it in both club and management as despite being linked with clubs as a player and jobs as a manager, he stuck by his morals and stayed with who he was with. Three promotions in four years including two league titles in his first two years saw Aspin become a fan favourite at Halifax. He was also the man in charge for all but one of the Shaymen's 30 game unbeaten run at the Shay between 18th April 2009 to the 13th November 2010 including 24 wins, an incredible record. Success continued in 2013/14 as the Shaymen recorded a 5th place finish therefore qualifying them for the playoffs in their first season back in the highly competitive Conference. Unfortunately playoff winners Cambridge broke Halifax hearts as they suffered defeat in the semi-finals. It looked as though the 2014/15 season was going to be even better for Halifax as they were comfortably in the playoff positions for the majority of the season however, 1 win in the last 15 games of the season saw Halifax finish 9th as a lack of firepower was the catalyst for a good season in contrast with the great season which they were hoping for. As a part-time club, it's hard to attract bigger players when you reach the Conference and with the departure of Lee Gregory to Millwall, you have to admit that the fact they were near the top for 1/3 of the season was an achievement in itself however, as a football fan, we can all understand the fans disappointment. The poor form at the end of last season unfortunately continued over to this year's campaign and with only 1 win in 10 games and 5 points from 30 which sees Halifax lie in 23rd place out of the 24 teams. With this form, changes had to be made and I agree with the decision to let Aspin go. He's been fantastic for Halifax and the Aspin era will live on in fan's memories however sometimes a team needs a new philosophy and I believe that bringing in a new manager is what's right for the club so overall I believe that unlike the decisions made by the League One club's Chairman's, Halifax's decision was well justified.
My thoughts on the latest Championship Transfer Rumours - 19/08/15
Andre Gray - Brentford to Bristol City - £9millionYesterday this transfer became a possibility as a £9million bid was accepted from Bristol City. The 24 year old made his name at Conference side Luton Town and was signed by Brentford on the 27th June 2014 and since then has notched up an impressive 20 goals in 52 appearances including 2 goals in as many games during this campaign. Despite his impressive goalscoring record during his career making him subject to interest from Premier League clubs including Arsenal and West Ham, it looks likely that he will be joining the League One champions Bristol City. Following the departure of Jay Emmanuel Thomas to QPR, it means that he will most likely be partnering Kieran Agard in Bristol City strike force. If the Bristol City midfielders can get good service into the clinical finisher, this could be one of the signings of the season and could certainly help consolidate City's place in a very competitive league.
Michail Antonio - Nottingham Forest to Derby - Around £4million
Another player who has been heavily linked with a Premier League move this summer is the English winger after several impressive performances last season. I find the winger to be a very entertaining player to watch as he's not afraid to take on his man and let fly from distance so it's no surprise that Forest would like to hold onto him. With 3 goals in as many games this year, he looks in the form of his career at this point. The winger is a nightmare for defenders as he is good in the air, shows great pace and athleticism and can finish just as well with his left foot as he can with his right. However, the positive news for Derby fans is that Antonio was left out of the squad for Tuesday night's goalless draw at Charlton due to him not being 'in the right frame of mind to play a game of football.' Whether this move will happen or not, I am still not sure but one thing I do know is that if Derby do sign him, he could be the difference between them reaching the playoffs or getting automatic promotion.
Benik Afobe - Wolves to Norwich - No official bid as of yet
After being tipped to be the next big thing after being voted the Arsenal U-18 player of the season in 2009-10, the 22 year old striker was never given a single appearance for the senior team and was instead sent out on loan for the next 5 seasons where he never really managed to continue his U-18 goal scoring record until he went on loan to MK Dons. This is where he stepped up his game, firing in 19 goals in 31 games before being signed by Wolves on the 14th January 2015 for a fee rumoured to be around £2million. Since then Benik Afobe has managed to find the best goal scoring form of his career so far scoring 13 goals in 21 games. His form last year makes it clear to see why there is interest from Premier League sides and if Norwich did get him I believe he would add a lot to the squad and ease the pressure on the Canaries' forward Cameron Jerome as both would be able to find the net on multiple occasions. However, I believe this transfer will not happen this year as Wolves have made it clear that the English forward is not for sale as they are probably hoping that he will play just as well as he did last season in order to fire Wolves back into the Premier League and if they don't get promoted, they could make a large profit on selling him next year.
Charlie Austin - QPR to most Premier League Clubs - QPR want around £15million
Charlie Austin epitomizes the proper footballer and is an inspiration to many young footballers. He started his career in the lower leagues at Kintbury Rangers and after hard work and a fantastic goal scoring record, he has managed to work his way up to being a recognised striker and now an England international. After proving himself on the highest stage last season having managed to find the net on 18 occasions in 36 games, a phenomenal tally for his maiden year in the Premier League. His amazing performances were not enough to keep QPR in the top flight, however there are a number of clubs who are after Austin's signature and it's fair to say, that's the league he deserves to be in. Rumours show that Newcastle United's interest in him has ended but this transfer should be a certain one, as long as clubs are willing to meet the £15million valuation. Let's be fair, if Raheem Sterling is worth £50million then £15million for Charlie Austin is a bargain but that's a story for another day. With Les Ferdinand confirming recently that "Two firm bids have been received", could Charlie Austin be signing for your club?
