The Football League's most in-form Strikers

Dwight Gayle
It's been a breakthrough year for 27 year old Gayle, who is enjoying the best season of his career since scoring 42 goals on loan at Bishops Stortford, which was back in 2011-12. His talent and goal scoring instinct was always evident at Crystal Palace, however, he found himself in and out of the Starting XI and could never really hit a good spell of form. However, since making the move to Championship side Newcastle United in the summer, he hasn't looked back. Under the leadership of Rafa Benitez, he's thrived, scoring 20 goals in 22 league games (including 21 starts). His career at the North East club started well, getting his first goal in his second game for the club. His confidence on the pitch increased with every game he played and it's shown this season, bagging a trio of braces and 2 hat tricks in first half of the year. If he keeps up this form, there's no doubt that he can hit an incredible 40 goals this season and having joined on a five-year deal in the summer, Newcastle fans can look forward to seeing him up top for the foreseeable future.

Billy Sharp
Now 30 years old, Billy Sharp is still proving to be one of the Football League's most prolific strikers. Since moving back to his local club Sheffield United last season, Sharp has looked back at his best as he managed to score 20 league goals last year. In the first half of this season, he's just 3 goals short of last year's impressive tally, having scored 17 in 27 games. He's proven to be a quality goal scorer wherever he's been, whether it be scoring with his left foot, right foot or head. He's on the homestretch of his career now and I feel stability will be the best option for him, so with that said, I think he'll opt to stay with his hometown side for the majority of the remaining years of his career. Having scored 78 goals in the Championship in his career, keeping him at the club would be the smartest thing Sheffield United could do, if they want to not only get back to the 2nd tier, but stay there.

Josh Morris
Having failed to live up to the hype surrounding him at Blackburn Rovers between 2010 and 2015, in which he never scored a goal for the club, he finally moved on to pastures new, signing for Bradford City last year. Bradford would have felt like this was good business, with Morris managing 8 goals on loan at fellow League One side Fleetwood in the season prior, but it didn't work out, as his debut goal proved to be his only goal. Morris has finally lived up to expectation this season though, and will be grateful for Scunthorpe United for taking a risk on his. He's currently the joint top scorer in League One with Billy Sharp, having found the net 17 times in 27 games. Having been given the faith of the manager, he's become a clinical finisher and a fear for most defences in the league. He's quick, very good technically, and cool as ice in front of goal, all the makings of a quality striker. However, for him to get back to the Premier League, the level he started his career at, he has to produce 2 or 3 more seasons like this. If he can do that, there's no doubt the 25 year old will start to rise back up the Football League.

Omar Bogle
Having been instrumental in returning Grimsby Town to the Football League, having scored a brace in the playoff final against Forest Green, no one would have expected him to perform how he has this year. It's his first year in the Football League and he's showing better quality than those who have played in these leagues for their entire career. Since the 2012-13 season, he has a phenomenal goal scoring record, managing no less than 18 in a season, and despite being two leagues higher than he was then, he's matched that record half way through this campaign. The central striker has incredible pace and when you match this with his superb ball control and hold up play, he's the whole package. His game is very similar to Romelu Lukaku for example and he's no doubt on the radar of many higher league clubs. Bogle is a man to look out for, as he could be the next to make the complete rise from non-league to premier league.

John Akinde
After spending the first seven years of his career struggling to find form in the Football League, Akinde made the decision to drop to the Conference with Alfreton and since then, he hasn't looked back. 18 goals with them earned him a move to current club Barnet, where he finally found a club he not only settled in, but was producing goal after goal for. He's scored 54 league goals over the past two seasons to help his side, not only back into League Two, but also to maintain their place in one of the hardest leagues in the country. This season, he's on pace for a third consecutive season in which he's scored more than 20 league goals, as he had 18 in 26 so far. He's proven to be a nightmare to defend against on his return to the Football League. Similar to Bogle, his game reminds you of watching Lukaku, a powerful pacy forward who can not only hold it up for the wingers, but also take on any defender. There was a chance that he was about to be joined by Bogle earlier in the month but with Grimsby reluctant to sell, every other team will be relieved to not have to see these two up top together. At 27 years old, Akinde is a player with heaps of experience and now he's at the peak of his game, he'd be a great acquisition for any club in League One or League Two.
